These campgrounds are a great retreat for anyone living is Southern California. Choose between Julian, Mt laguna and Palomar Mountain.
Mt. LagunaÂ
Mt Laguna campground is set in a pine forest overlooking a meadow. There are many lakes that you can hike to. The best campsites are in the Meadow Loop, because they overlook the meadow. The most spacious campsites are in the Shady and Sunny loops. This campground is a lot better than its neighbor, Burnt Rancheria, because it is in a more scenic area and there is no road noise.

What to do at Mt. Laguna

This 4 mile hike to the top of Garnet Peak with great views starts at the Penny Pines Trailhead.
Starting at Laguna Campground, this 3 mile loop trail takes you around Big Laguna Lake.
Starting at Laguna Campground, this 1.5 mile trail takes you to the top of Lightning Ridge, with great views.
Julian
William Heise Campground is in William Heise County Park, only ten minutes from Julian. This campground has it all: spacious campsites, showers, playgrounds, cabin rentals with electricity ($65) and even 5 miles of trails.

What to do in Julian
A 1-hour tour takes you through the Eagle and High Peak mines.
A 1-hour tour teaches you about the wolves and conservation programs.
This moderate, 3 mile hike near Julian takes you through oak and pine forests to a great view of the town.
Palomar Mountain
This is the best campground on Palomar Mountain because of the forest location. Palomar Mountain has a unique Sierra Nevada-like atmosphere with pine, fir and cedar trees.

What to do at Palomar Mountain
This moderate, 3.6 mile loop passes through forests, meadows and ponds.
This small, peaceful pond is walking distance from Doane Valley Campground
This fire lookout tower has great views of San Diego County.
This 1-mile loop trail is a great alternative to Lower Doane Valley trail if you don't want to walk as far. It even has a trail guide
This observatory is home to the 200-inch Hale Telescope and has a museum and gift shop.
